Rome: Italy has granted asylum to a green-eyed Afghan woman, Sherbat Gula, who became famous after appearing on the cover of a popular magazine in the 80’s.
An American photographer, McCurry, photographed Sharbat-e-Gula in 1984 in a refugee camp in Pakistan, a metaphor for the plight of Afghan refugees around the world.
McCurry returned to Pakistan in 2002 and found the woman.
In 2016, Ashraf Ghani invited Sherbat-e-Gula to Afghanistan.
After the arrival of the Taliban, Sharbat-e-Gula had appealed for help to leave Afghanistan, to which the Prime Minister of Italy granted him asylum.
